I spent a great hour on Saturday photographing the Circuit of Ingleborough time trial and trying out some new techniques to capture something 'different'.

The Lakes Road Club recently had their annual trip to the Velodrome at Manchester and I tagged along to have a play with flash techniques. A few of the resulting images are now available for viewing in the gallery.

I'll now be heading to Wales for the Rally GB.

The Lakes Road Club had a trip to the Manchester Velodrome last week for a session on the track, I was asked by the organiser to go along and get some pictures. It was my first time to the Velodrome and what a fantastic place it was, it looked like hard work for the guys (and girl) on the track and I captured some great shots of them in action. Have a look in the gallery and see for yourself.

I arrived home tonight to find a fantastic canvas print of one of my pictures, courtesy of Lancashire Life magazine. The magazine has run a Lake District photography competition this year with a theme of 'Paradise Before Me', the competition was supported by the Wordsworth Trust. From the hundreds of images entered into the competition mine was judged into second place and I am over the moon with that result.

I was invited to photograph Race 6 of the South Windermere Sailing Club Frostbite 2009 series today, thanks for the invite Doug. After a rainy morning the weather turned out not so bad for the race and I managed one or two good shots, some of my favourites are in this gallery.

I had some excellent news recently when I was informed that I had won a travel photography competition run by the Daily Mirror and ePHOTOzine, an on-line photography magazine. It's always great to win a competition but this had thousands of entries which made it even more special.

As stated in my last news story I have had this image chosen by Photography Monthly magazine as one of their Top 100 and it features in this months magazine. Please have a look at the others on their web site and if you feel mine is worthy of a vote then I'd really appreciate it.

July was a successful month with news coming in from 3 magazines that they were to feature some of my images in forthcoming magazines.

Appleby Horse Fair is one of the largest in Europe and takes place early every June. It is held in a field commonly known as Fair Hill, less than a mile from Appleby town centre. The fair took place this year from Thursday 4th - Monday 8th June, I was there with my camera on Friday.

An early start one frosty morning in April resulted in some stunning pictures of Castlerigg Stone Circle and Ashness Bridge. View them for yourself in the Keswick & Derwentwater gallery.

As promised, I have now created a new web site dedicated to wedding and portrait photography by Darren Athersmith. Lakeland-Images.co.uk will remain as a showcase for my landscape and event photography but I felt that weddings and portraits deserved a dedicated site which will include password protected galleries for customer images. Following requests to undertake more wedding and portrait sessions I have decided to add a page to this site to advertise the fact. Presently it is simply a single page with some examples of my work but in the longer term I may add more details and further examples, eventually I may even set up an additional web site purely for weddings and portraits by Darren Athersmith.

The 2009 Malcolm Wilson Rally came through Grizedale Forrest yesterday and I was at SS6 to capture the action.

Following a special request I have uploaded a new image to the 'Coast' gallery, showing a panoramic view from Roa Island taken early one September morning.

Following a recent visit to Pooley Bridge a gallery named 'Ullswater' has been added and populated with a picture of the boathouse to get things started. Also a new picture of Grasmere has been added, taken from the footpath to Alcock Tarn.
